THE DOMINO SUGAR FIRE & ASBESTOS RENOVATION

Located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn along the East River, the Domino Sugar Refinery is one the last remnants of Brooklyn’s industrial past. Designated a landmark by the city of New York, the facility, which produced refined sugar for decades, ceased operation in 2004.

The building was completely rebuilt in 1882 after a fire largely destroyed the original refinery. Like many facilities constructed throughout the late-19^th and early 20^th centuries, asbestos was heavily used in the construction and maintenance of the Domino Sugar Refinery.
