Painters Asbestos Exposure

As with any trade involving the renovating and remodeling of older buildings, painters are at an increased risk for asbestos exposure. Painters commonly need to prepare walls for painting by applying sanding joint compound, plaster and spackle which contained asbestos. Painters also removed old layers of paint, much of which was manufactured with asbestos well into the 1970s and ‘80s.

Asbestos was also common in building materials that painters may need to remove such as:

  • DRYWALL
  • JOINT COMPOUND
  • TEXTURE
  • SPACKLING
  • CAULK

Sanding, or disturbing asbestos can cause the release of millions of microscopic particles which can be inhaled even through protective masks. Sanding and scraping prior to painting can easily release asbestos particles, increasing the risk of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.

ASBESTOS EXPOSURE RISK FOR PAINTERS

With or without a protective mask, painters may face exposure to asbestos particles. These masks were often only made of paper and were totally ineffective in stopping asbestos fibers from entering the lungs. Even if your mask was helpful, asbestos particles can stick to clothing or hair, allowing them to be inhaled long after initial disruption.

Studies on asbestos exposure in painters have found increased instances of asbestosis and mesothelioma among those who have worked in this trade. In many instances, asbestos-related illnesses show no symptoms for decades, meaning even if you haven’t worked as a painter for years, you are still at risk for developing a deadly disease.
